Quinlan Professor Serves as Fulbright Specialist in Poland

Quinlan School of Business Professor Dow Scott recently served as a Fulbright specialist, consulting with Poland’s AGH University of Science and Technology on its human resources program. According to the school, the Fulbright specialist program “places distinguished U.S. faculty and professionals from various industries in short-term collaborative projects at eligible institutions in over 140 countries worldwide.”

The research highlights companies’ considerable fraud exposure and suggests that they can combat this problem by implementing established internal controls meant to detect and prevent fraud. This research will be published by the Journal of Forensic and Investigative Accounting.

According to a new book co-edited by Quinlan School of Business Professor A. G. (Tassos) Malliaris, the instability of the human mind led to the formation and sheer magnitude of the 2008 global financial crisis. This hypothesis is explored and tested in The Global Financial Crisis and Its Aftermath: Hidden Factors in the Meltdown. The book focuses on the three factors that intensified the meltdown—economic, psychological and social values—and features chapters written by Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen, behavioral finance pioneer Hersh Shefrin and New York Times best-selling author Nassim Taleb.

Quinlan Graduate Students Receive Scholarships From Hu-Friedy

According to a press release on the school’s website, four graduate students from the Quinlan School of Business were presented with $1,000 scholarships following outstanding work on a class project for Chicago-based manufacturer, Hu-Friedy. As part of a Supply Chain Analytics course, the dental equipment manufacturer tasked students with evaluating alternative shipping strategies to move materials from their suppliers to their manufacturing facilities. The manufacturer was so impressed with the students’ work following the project that it awarded scholarships to the winning team of Mike Larocco, Jihong Liu, Jie Wei Lo, and Tom Scanlan.
