Saïd Business Scholar’s Report Details Findings on Millenials and Social Entrepreneurship

A new Saïd Business School report examining the views of millennials on the social role and responsibilities of business captures the growing international significance of social entrepreneurship. Drawing on the responses of more than 2000 young professionals (YPs), 40 business leaders and 500 social entrepreneurs in US, UK, Mexico, Brazil, China and South Africa, the report casts light on how global trends are influencing the values of tomorrow’s leaders, showing how they define success in their professional careers, and their views of the potential of social entrepreneurship to offer new business models which combine profit with positive social impact.

The report, (Redefining) Success in a Changing World, is authored by Soushiant Zanganehpour, a consultant at Saïd’s Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship.

Oxford MBA Students Worked on Experimental Release of Thom Yorke’s Solo Album

Thom Yorke’s decision to release his latest album via BitTorrent caused a notable stir in the music world. What isn’t well known though is that Oxford MBA students consulted with Radiohead’s management team on the experimental release that uses BitTorrent to allow customers to buy the album directly from the artist. The idea of artists using BitTorrent to market and sell their music is controversial as the platform is infamous in the music industry for allowing fans to share music for free.

Oxford MBA Students Complete International Strategic Consulting Projects

MBA students from Saïd Business School recently completed their strategic consulting projects (SCPs) for 29 organizations in 16 countries around the world, including Tanzania, Qatar, Italy, the US, Zambia and India.

Each year, small teams of MBA students complete a challenging eight-week-long project for a sponsoring organisation, applying their learning to specific issues or business opportunities identified by the company. The SCPs are located in a broad range of sectors and the nature of the briefs is equally diverse. This year’s projects included improving the delivery of financial services to rural Ethiopians, analysing the ways in which technology could improve healthcare delivery in India, and studying the feasibility of a UK spaceport.

Oxford Study Warns Against Internal Cyber-Attacks

In a new Harvard Business Review article, Professor David Upton of Saïd Business School and Professor Sadie Creese of Oxford’s Global Cyber Security Capacity Centre warn that internal cyber attacks against companies are an increasing threat that costs tens of billions of dollars a year worldwide and ruin companies. Their study found that while many organisations are intensifying their defences against external attack, these widely used safeguards are often ineffective against attacks involving insiders. Such attacks from insiders, be they from employees, suppliers, or other companies legitimately connected to a company’s computer system, pose a more pernicious threat than external attacks.

Saїd Student Achievement Recognized with BNY Mellon Achievement Awards

Said Business School announced twenty two students from across the school’s MBA, MSc in Financial Economics, and Masters in Law and Finance programs as recipients of the Oxford BNY Mellon Achievement Awards for ‘community spirit and community knowledge.’ In a June 12th ceremony with Dean Peter Tufano and BNY Mellon representatives, the students accepted awards honoring commitments made to their school’s and individual classes’s collective greatness.

‘Our students come from all over the globe and are drawn from many different sectors, each bringing their own unique and diverse perspective, professional knowledge, and experience to enrich the class and build a strong community that collectively has the power to address world-scale problems.’ said Tufano.

Announcing Saïd’s New Skoll Scholars, 2014-15

The Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship at Saïd Business School is delighted to announce Skoll Scholars for the 2014-15 academic year. The four Scholars, who were selected as recipients of this highly competitive scholarship following a rigorous selection process, will commence MBA studies this fall:

–    Nora Petty of Ann Arbor MI, USA, who spent the past seven years committed to ending malaria deaths with the Clinton Health Access Initiative and the Malaria Consortium

–    Nikhil Nair of Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh in India, who worked with rural markets and solar energy enterprises in India, the United Arab Emirates, and East Africa

–    José Miguel Alfaro Gómez of San Jose, Costa Rica who founded s.e.e.d., a boutique law firm targeted to social businesses in Costa Rica in various fields like sustainability, conservation, microfinance, fair trade, culture, education, volunteering, health, sports and development.

–    Patrick Beattie of Cambridge MA, USA who worked with Diagnostics For All (DFA), a nonprofit medical diagnostics development company, and increased its global reach.
