Smeal Students Study SCM in Italy

Over the summer, 23 Penn State Smeal College of Business students spent six weeks in Florence, Italy, studying supply chain and management from an Italian perspective. The students studied with Norm Aggon, assistant department chair and instructor in operations and supply chain management and Ron Johnson, senior instructor in management and organization.

The course was called, “Extreme Global Makeover: Integrating Supply Chain Applications, Managerial Skills, and Italian Culture for Personal Success.” The course provided students an opportunity to visit four different Italian companies and learn to assess their manufacturing operations in terms of supply chain management and sustainability.

Smeal Appoints New Faculty Director

Dennis Sheehan, the Virginia and Louis Benzak Professor of Finance at the Penn State Smeal College of Business, has been named the faculty director of both the Penn State Smeal MBA Program and the Executive MBA Program in Philadelphia.

The faculty director is responsible for academic aspects of the programs, including curriculum, concentrations, global immersions as well as other aspects of both of the programs.

Sheehan says that, in addition to day-to-day tasks of the job, he and the program leadership team will undertake the project of revising the MBA as well as the Executive MBA programs.

Smeal Offers New Exec. Ed Program

The Executive Program at Smeal College of Business at Penn State University is offering a new program for executives in the hospitality industry that will help participants understand how to use Big Data and employ digital marketing strategies to increase performance on many levels. The program, Big Digital Marketing for Hospitality, will run on October 2, 2014 to October 3, 2014, in Philadelphia at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown.

The program will cover Big Data basics, digital marketing strategies, online advertising methods, and legal ramifications. Participants will also learn to better navigate social media to shape the organization’s image and brand.

Smeal Students Selected for Supply Chain Program

The Penn State Smeal College of Business is one of only two schools from which Burlington Stores, a national off-price retailer headquartered in New Jersey, actively recruits for its Supply Chain Leader Development Program. This leadership program for supply chain graduates is an 18-month program that introduces new graduates to the various roles and responsibilities of leadership at the company.

“We find that students from Penn State are able to hit the ground running in the supply chain area and also have a broad foundational understanding of business,” said Donna Norton, talent acquisition manager for college recruitment. “We’re proud to have such a robust partnership with the Penn State community,” said Norton. “Through the center, we look for opportunities to reap the benefits of the latest faculty research.”In addition to its recruitment efforts, Burlington Stores is also a corporate sponsor of the Center for Supply Chain Research, a Smeal research center dedicated to bridging academia and industry to improve the theory and practice of supply chain.

Smeal Exec. MBA Hosts Senior Leadership Forum

The Penn State Smeal Executive MBA Program hosted its inaugural Senior Leadership Forum, an opportunity for current and prospective students as well as program alumni to come together to discuss business and leadership, in June, 2014. In addition to panel discussions on the future for strategy, moderated by Al Vicere, professor of strategic leadership at Smeal; and the future for leadership, moderated by EMBA Program alumnus Tim Quigley ‘04, assistant professor at the University of Georgia, the forum also featured a panel discussion on health care. Smeal Professor Publishes Book

Penn State Smeal College of Business’ clinical professor of international business Terrence R. Guay, has just released a new textbook, The Business Environment of Europe published by Cambridge University Press.

The textbook provides a comprehensive overview of the business landscape in Europe by examining the region’s economies and policies, the structure and dynamics of specific industries, the impacts of globalization and future challenges.

“A lot of Americans don’t really understand the intricacies of the European business environment,” said Guay. “To lump all European countries together is a misunderstanding of Europe. Some countries do have serious economic problems, but others are among the most competitive and successful nations in the world.”
