Davis Increases in Commercial Startups
The Davis Graduate School of Management at the University California has launched 14 commercial startups during the past year through June 30, 2014. This is the largest number of new ventures based on UC Davis technology to be started in a single year.
Of the 21 companies launched over the last two years, most are based in Northern California, with several located in Davis and the surrounding areas. Some of those companies are Tule Technologies, 5Plus, Reprovantage, and ViVita. Some of these campanies are developing solutions that address issues like agricultural water efficiency and human health.
A unique and collaborative network that is enabled by Venture Catalyst has cultivated the increase in university startups. This new network is a new unit within the Technology Management and Corporate Relations division of the Office of Research, led by Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Dushyant Pathak.
Students Attend Leadership Program at Davis
Undergraduate students from historically black colleges and universities and from Hispanic-serving institutions will learn about marketing and management skills as part of an intensive two-week program that the University of California, Davis, Graduate School of Management is hosting this month.
The University of California Summer Institute for Emerging Managers and Leaders, which is a collaboration of UC’s six business schools, offers undergraduates the chance to learn the principles of business development, entrepreneurship and other key management skills.
For two consecutive summers, students learn from internationally renowned faculty, take part in hands-on workshops and develop valuable connections with high-profile industry leaders and their peers.
Davis Holds BioMed and Engineering Entrepreneurship Event
UC Davis Graduate School of Management students participated in the BioMedical and Engineering Entrepreneurship Academy July 9 to July 11, 2014. The academy is an intensive program integrating lecture, exercises and individual projects. Participants work to identify, design and validate market opportunities for their research.
The event connects students, researchers and faculty with industry representatives and investors assembled some of the university’s largest departments. The event is co-sponsored by the UC Davis College of Engineering, School of Medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine and the Office of Research.
Davis Dean Appointed as Chancellor’s Advisor
Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi announced on June 19, 2014 Steve Currall, dean of the Graduate School of Management, as an adviser on UC Davis’ possible opening of a third campus, and as a catalyst between UC Davis and the Northern California business community.
Katehi is exploring the idea of having a campus closer to the state capital in Sacramento as a way to enhance UC Davis’ contributions to and impact on public policy in areas such as food, health and the environment. Continue reading…
Former CEO of Citigroup to Speak at Davis Commencement
Sandy Weill, former Chairman and CEO of Citigroup will speak to the audience at the UC Davis Graduate School of Management commencement ceremony on June 14, 2014.
Mr. Weill is Chairman Emeritus of Citigroup and was recently appointed Chairman of Hamilton Insurance Group. He retired as CEO of Citigroup in 2003 and served as non-executive Chairman until April 2006.
Mr. Weill, who had been Chairman and CEO of Travelers, became Chairman of its predecessor, Commercial Credit Company, in 1986, successfully leading the company through a public stock offering by its then parent, Control Data Corporation. Commercial Credit acquired Primerica Corporation in 1988 and adopted its name until 1993, when Primerica acquired The Travelers Corporation and adopted the Travelers Group name. In 1997, the company acquired Salomon Inc. and combined it with its Smith Barney unit to form the global securities and investment firm, Salomon Smith Barney.
Prior to 1986, Mr. Weill had been President of American Express Company and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of its Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company subsidiary. Mr. Weill became a Director of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in 2001 and served in this capacity until December 31, 2006. He also served as a Director on the Boards of United Technologies Corp. from 1999 to 2003, AT&T Corp. from 1998 to 2002, and E. I. Du Pont Nemours and Company from 1998 to 2001.
The EastWest Institute awarded Mr. Weill their distinguished Corporate Leadership Award in December 2005 at an event in London with Prime Minister Tony Blair. Mr. Weill is a lifetime member of the Council on Foreign Relations; Director of Koç Holding, headquartered in Turkey; and a member of the Board of Advisors of the Baker Institute at Rice University.
President Bush asked Mr. Weill, along with four other private sector business leaders, to lead a nationwide effort to encourage private donations for relief and reconstruction in response to the South Asia earthquake that occurred on October 8, 2005. Working with the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy, a nonprofit forum of CEOs and Chairpersons, to which Mr. Weill was named Chairman of the Board in July 2004 and is now Honorary Chairman. Mr. Weill is also the 1997 recipient of the New York State Governor’s Art Award.
