VSB Dean Explains Critical Thinking

Villanova School of Business Dean Patrick Maggitti recently published an article for US News & World report on the importance of critical thinking when looking for employees. He refers to a study done by indeed.com that states that since 2009, mentions of critical thinking have doubled in job postings. Dean Maggitti explains what being able to think critically really means and how students can be sure that they are learning the skills that are necessary to become critical thinkers in the work force after business school.

Maggitti gives readers three critical thinking skills that business school graduates need to be attractive to employers. He explains that although companies are looking for critical thinkers, that is only a portion of the higher skill to create new solutions. “It is far easier to be the art critic than the artist. Yet the first step in becoming a great artist is being able to look with a critical eye upon what has already been created,” he explains.

Villanova Alumnus Invited to Bloomberg Hall of Fame for High BAT Score

Villanova School of Business alumnus, Michael Breault ’15, has been invited into the Bloomberg Institute Hall of Fame after earning the fourth highest score in the Americas region on the Bloomberg Aptitude Test (BAT). The Bloomberg Aptitude Test is a tool developed by Bloomberg that helps students and recent graduates to connect with financial employers worldwide. Those who complete the BAT can prove their strengths in areas ranging from finance to business and personal competencies.

After completing the test, students can enter scores in the BAT Talent Search. The BAT Talent Search is a tool used by employers to help them to identify the best candidates for entry-level business positions. Employers can then view the submitted student profiles anonymously and have the opportunity  to contact the students who have testing profiles that are complementary to the employer’s available career opportunities.

NFL Hall of Famer Donates $1 Million to Villanova

NFL Hall of Famer and Fox Sports analyst, Howard M. Long and his wife Diane, have donated $1 million to Villanova University. The Long’s commitment will go toward the University’s $600 million Comprehensive Capital Campaign, “For the Greater Great: The Villanova Campaign to Ignite Change. The gift will create a new eight room as part of a building project, and will be named The Howie Long Strength Training Center. The Strength Training Center will be open for Villanova’s top-ranked FCS Football program and the rest of the 24 varsity sports at the university.

 

This new facility will help to supply students with a state-of-the-art athletic training center within one centralized location. In addition to the “The Howie Long Strength Training Center,”  the building will also include a new football locker room and coaches’ offices. The Villanova Football program will also name its annual defensive player of the year award “The Howie Long Defensive Player of the Year Award,” in recognition of the Long’s commitment to the school.

Villanova Students Receive Meyer Innovation and Creative Excellence Awards

Five students from the Villanova School of Business have been announced as the winners of the annual Meyer Innovation and Creative Excellence Awards. The awards were given out by Villanova’s Center for Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship. The five students that  were selected to receive the award are: Joanna Schaff ’15 COE, Alyssa Nazar ’15 CLAS, Stephanie Rozalski ’15 VLS, Teresa Yang ’15 CON, and Sergio Rizzuto-Flancbaum ’15 VSB. Hezekiah Lewis, III, M.F.A, assistant professor of film studies, earned the faculty ICE Award.

The ICE Awards were created and endowed by Patrick Meyer ’74 VSB. The awards were established in honor of the Meyer family (Patrick ’74, Edward ’86, and C. Paul ’30) to recognize a spirit of innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship that enhances Villanova University. Those who are given the Meyer ICE Award receive a trophy and a cash award of $2,500 for faculty recipients and $1,000 for student recipients.

Villanova Names Biz School Dean as First Provost

Patrick G. Maggitti, Dean of the Villanova School of Business, has been named the University’s first provost. Dean Maggitti will begin his new position Aug. 1, 2015. As provost, Maggitti will serve as the University’s chief academic officer and second ranking officer of the university. He will oversee the six colleges at the school; the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Villanova School of Business, the College of Engineering, the College of Nursing, the College of Professional Studies and the Villanova University School of Law.

Dean Maggitti has been at Villanova University since 2008. He became dean of the Villanova Business School in 2012. In addition to serving as the dean, he is also an associate professor of strategic management and entrepreneurship. Maggitti is also the founder of the Center for Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship, where he also previously served as the director.

Villanova Hosts Graduate Open House

Villanova University will be hosting a Graduate and Adult Education Open House event. The Open House will be held March 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Connelly Center at Villanova University. Those who attend the open house will receive a waiver for the application fee. During the event, prospective students can learn more about the MBA program at VSB.

The MBA program specializes in working professionals, allowing you to pursue your degree part-time, either in an accelerated format known as the Fast Track program or at your own pace with the Flex Track or Online programs. The program is designed so that students can continue to work, making progress toward your degree while taking lessons back to the office for an immediate impact.
